Pentagon Investigating Possible Cyberattack At U.S. Military Bases

Federal military investigators are examining a series of mysterious equipment failures at U.S. military installations, raising concerns that hackers may have successfully interfered with systems operating inside some of the nation’s most sensitive facilities.

The incidents, which occurred at several installations across the country, initially appeared to involve routine mechanical problems. However, unusual similarities between the failures have prompted investigators to consider whether they were deliberately caused by outside actors.

The investigation comes as cybersecurity threats against American infrastructure continue to draw attention from national security officials, particularly as increasingly sophisticated attacks target systems that were not originally designed to withstand digital intrusions.

On Thursday, Reuters reported that the Pentagon is treating a series of refrigeration failures at military bases as a suspected cyberattack, with federal investigators examining whether hackers remotely manipulated freezer systems at multiple installations.

According to four officials familiar with the matter, at least six military commissaries experienced unexplained malfunctions in late August, resulting in significant quantities of spoiled food.

Military commissaries provide groceries and other essential supplies to service members and their families, making the disruptions particularly concerning. At Fort Huachuca in Arizona, refrigeration equipment reportedly switched into defrost mode overnight, causing temperatures to rise and destroying frozen merchandise.

In an August 26 Facebook post, the installation explained that its freezer “went into defrost mode where it heated up all the food.”

The unusual behavior raised questions about whether the equipment had simply malfunctioned or whether someone had deliberately altered its operating settings.

The Pentagon has since confirmed that personnel associated with U.S. Cyber Command are coordinating with other federal agencies and law enforcement officials as investigators attempt to determine what happened.

The Army Criminal Investigation Division also acknowledged that its Cyber Field Office is involved in the investigation. Investigators are now examining a potentially significant international connection.

Earlier this month, a confirmed cyberattack struck refrigeration systems at more than 350 commercial establishments in France, causing widespread food spoilage and substantial financial losses.

In some cases, hackers reportedly manipulated temperature controls so aggressively that refrigeration equipment caught fire. The similarities between the French attacks and the American military incidents have attracted investigators’ attention.

Army investigators confirmed they are working with French law enforcement officials to better understand the European disruptions. However, authorities have not established that the incidents are connected.

The French attack also exposed potential weaknesses in aging refrigeration technology.

Danish manufacturer Danfoss acknowledged that many controllers used at affected European locations were obsolete or operating outdated software, potentially leaving them vulnerable to unauthorized access.

Reuters could not determine whether the same equipment was operating at the affected American installations.

Cybersecurity specialists have warned that connecting industrial equipment to the internet can create opportunities for hackers to interfere with systems responsible for essential services.

Such vulnerabilities could extend beyond refrigeration equipment to other infrastructure supporting military operations and civilian communities.
