Infamous CBS Host Caught Attempting To Hide Bombshell Peltola Scandal

A reported newsroom showdown at CBS News has erupted into a public controversy after veteran Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan was accused of pushing back against coverage of an alleged Democratic ballot scheme in Alaska.

The dispute began during CBS News’ 9 a.m. editorial meeting Thursday, when editor-in-chief Bari Weiss reportedly encountered resistance from staffers over a New York Times investigation involving Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola.

According to multiple network insiders who spoke to Fox News Digital, Weiss wanted CBS journalists to aggressively pursue allegations that Democratic operatives recruited a candidate with the same name as Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan in an effort to confuse voters.

Weiss reportedly made her position unmistakable.

“This is a scandal,” she told staff.

But not everyone inside the network appeared to share her enthusiasm.

Sources described “significant resistance” from employees who reportedly argued that similar political tactics had been used before and questioned whether the controversy deserved such intense attention.

Brennan was among those mentioned in the account.

When Weiss asked whether anyone could identify comparable examples of ballot confusion, Brennan reportedly brought up New Hampshire Republican Senate candidate John Sununu and his brother, former Gov. Chris Sununu.

Her comparison suggested that some voters might confuse the two Republican brothers, despite the Alaska allegations involving a deliberate effort to recruit an unrelated candidate with the incumbent senator’s name.

The distinction is central to the controversy.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that individuals connected to Peltola’s political operation began searching for Alaska residents named Dan Sullivan in 2025.

The alleged objective was to persuade another Sullivan to enter the Senate race, potentially drawing votes away from the Republican incumbent.

Retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. ultimately joined the contest and now appears alongside the incumbent on Alaska’s four-candidate ranked-choice ballot.

The Times reported that interviews, text messages and documents connected to potential litigation supported allegations of a broader recruitment operation involving additional potential spoiler candidates.

Former Peltola campaign manager Elisa Rios reportedly said the Democratic candidate was not personally involved in organizing the effort but was “definitely aware.”

Peltola’s campaign has denied participating in the alleged scheme.

The Democrat also dismissed the Times investigation as a “distraction” and “stuff to sell newspapers.”

Meanwhile, CBS political correspondent Ed O’Keefe offered another comparison during a Thursday appearance on CBS Mornings.

O’Keefe acknowledged that the Alaska controversy “could be a dirty trick, but it’s not illegal,” before adding that “this has happened before, kind of.”

He pointed to a 2016 Alaska Republican Senate primary involving former Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan, who briefly challenged Sen. Lisa Murkowski.

That candidate shared a name with Alaska’s other sitting senator but was not related to him.

The comparison became another point of debate because the current allegations center on whether a political campaign deliberately organized a recruitment effort to exploit voter confusion.

Not everyone inside CBS agreed with the characterization of the editorial discussion as contentious.

One network employee told Fox News Digital that Brennan and O’Keefe were providing context rather than attempting to minimize the allegations.

The employee described the meeting as a “healthy, good conversation.”

Brennan also publicly rejected suggestions that she opposed reporting on the controversy.

Responding to constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley on X, the CBS host directly challenged the account circulating online.

“Fox is wrong. That is not what happened in the meeting at all. No one who spoke at the network meeting opposed covering the campaign or story but rather exchanged ideas on how to do it. All of the AK candidates also know they have an open invitation (repeatedly offered) to join Face the Nation. So does the NH GOP candidate who has also been repeatedly invited. I look forward to seeing my colleagues cover it too.”

Brennan additionally pointed to existing reporting by Fox News and The Washington Post, disputing the suggestion that she wanted the allegations ignored.

Her denial came after Turley highlighted the original report about the internal CBS discussion.

Weiss, meanwhile, reportedly continued encouraging journalists to investigate the Alaska controversy, describing it as a “great story” and a “learning moment” for the newsroom.

Several CBS employees were already traveling to Alaska or reporting from the state after being assigned to cover the developing story Wednesday night.

Among them was congressional correspondent Taurean Small.

A CBS News spokesperson declined to comment on the reported internal disagreement.

Outside the newsroom, the allegations have already triggered a major political and legal response.

Alaska Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy ordered state authorities to investigate whether the alleged recruitment operation violated election laws and whether criminal charges or civil enforcement action might be warranted.

The Justice Department has also filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent certification of the Senate election results under certain circumstances if the Republican incumbent loses and votes for the other Sullivan could have affected the outcome.

Sen. Sullivan has condemned the alleged recruitment effort, describing it as a “SCANDAL AT THE HIGHEST ORDER.”

However, the allegations remain contested, and investigators have not established that Peltola personally committed a crime.

The controversy has nevertheless created an uncomfortable situation for CBS News as Weiss attempts to establish her editorial leadership.
