GOP Senate Stronghold Officially At Risk Of Flipping As Election Day Race Tightens

A Republican Senate stronghold is now officially in danger of flipping into Democratic hands as early Election Day results reveal a stunning development in South Carolina.

Democratic challenger Annie Andrews has taken an early lead over Republican Sen. Darline Graham in a state Republicans have dominated for generations.

According to election results, Andrews has received 237,499 votes or 50.8%, compared to Graham’s 223,255 votes or 47.7%.

Independent candidate Kasie Whitener trails with 3,582 votes or 0.8%.

With approximately 23.1% of the expected vote counted, Andrews holds a lead of 14,244 votes. There has not been projected a winner, with the contest as too early to call.

The early numbers represent a potentially significant development in a state President Donald Trump carried by nearly 18 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.

Republicans have controlled this particular Senate seat since 1964, making the possibility of a Democratic pickup particularly consequential as both parties battle for control of the chamber.

The surprising early returns follow weeks of polling that suggested the traditionally Republican state was becoming unexpectedly competitive.

Heading into Election Day, Graham held a narrow 2-3 point advantage over Andrews, leading 48% to 45.4%.

The unusual election follows the death of longtime Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham in July.

Republican Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Graham’s sister to complete his term, placing her in the Senate ahead of a competitive general election.

President Trump endorsed Graham and worked to consolidate Republican support behind her candidacy.

Nevertheless, the campaign encountered difficulties as questions emerged about her political experience and preparedness for national office.

During a Republican primary debate, Graham acknowledged that national security was not her area of expertise, an exchange that attracted attention during the campaign.

Meanwhile, Andrews, a Charleston pediatrician who previously challenged Republican Rep. Nancy Mace in 2022, has focused her campaign on healthcare and economic concerns.

The Democrat has traveled extensively throughout South Carolina while seeking support beyond the state’s traditional Democratic strongholds.

National Republicans have also devoted attention to the contest, including Sen. Tim Scott, who campaigned in his home state.

The stakes extend beyond South Carolina as Republicans seek to maintain control of the Senate.

A Democratic victory would represent a major shift in a state where the GOP has consistently prevailed in federal statewide elections for decades.

However, with more than three-quarters of the expected vote still outstanding, the early Democratic advantage does not establish the final outcome.

For now, Andrews holds the lead as election officials continue counting ballots in one of Tuesday night’s most closely watched Senate contests.
