NEW: Longtime GOP Incumbent Loses Re-Election Bid

Another longtime House Republican has been ousted as Democrats continue expanding their congressional gains following Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Mich., lost his reelection bid to Democratic state Sen. Sean McCann in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District, ending a congressional career that began in 2011.

The Associated Press called the race for McCann at 1:13 p.m. Wednesday, delivering Democrats another Republican-held seat as the GOP grapples with the fallout from its midterm losses.

With approximately 97% of the vote counted, McCann had secured slightly more than 50% of the vote, while Huizenga trailed with roughly 48%.

The result marks a significant political reversal in southwest Michigan, where Huizenga had spent more than a decade building a reputation as a reliable conservative voice in Washington.

McCann declared victory hours before the official race call, releasing a statement shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday that acknowledged his supporters and thanked Huizenga for his “years of service to our community.”

“Even though we were told over and over that this race wasn’t winnable, we built a big and broad coalition of people from every corner of this district, every political party, who believe that our government should work for the people and not the powerful,” McCann wrote in a statement.

“This victory belongs to the people all across Southwest Michigan, and it’s the people that I will work every day to serve – to take on the corruption and policies shortchanging our families, and work with anyone to make life better and protect the American Dream for our children.”

The Democrat’s victory adds to a growing list of Republican incumbents who lost their seats as voters delivered control of the House and Senate to Democrats.

Huizenga, who first entered Congress in January 2011, had established himself as an experienced member of the Republican conference.

The Michigan Republican served on the House Financial Services Committee and advocated policies focused on reducing federal regulations, strengthening American manufacturing and promoting economic growth.

He also supported President Donald Trump’s economic priorities, including tax relief and efforts to reduce government spending.

Despite his lengthy record in Washington, Huizenga faced an increasingly competitive political environment in Michigan’s 4th District.

The district encompasses Allegan and Van Buren counties, along with portions of Ottawa, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Berrien counties.

It includes major southwest Michigan communities such as Kalamazoo, Holland and Battle Creek, bringing together areas with sharply different political preferences.

McCann, who has served in the Michigan Senate since 2019, campaigned on affordability, government accountability and economic concerns affecting working families.

The Democratic challenger also presented himself as a candidate willing to work across party lines, seeking support beyond his party’s traditional voting base.

His campaign benefited from growing Democratic momentum in western Michigan, where competitive congressional races have attracted increasing attention from both national parties.

Earlier in the election cycle, the Cook Political Report had characterized the district as leaning Republican before shifting its assessment to a toss-up.

The changing political landscape created an opening for McCann, who ultimately defeated an incumbent with years of congressional experience and established name recognition.

Republicans had hoped Huizenga’s record and longstanding relationships throughout southwest Michigan would help him withstand the national political environment.

But the Democratic challenger secured enough support to overcome those advantages, contributing to the party’s expanding House majority.

The loss carries broader implications for Michigan Republicans, who also faced difficult congressional contests elsewhere in the state.

By Wednesday morning, the Associated Press had projected Democrats as winners in 228 House races nationwide, comfortably surpassing the 218 seats required for a majority.

McCann’s victory adds another seat to that total and further reduces the Republican conference heading into the next Congress.

For Donald Trump, the results create additional obstacles as he prepares to govern alongside Democratic majorities during the final two years of his presidency.

Democrats will gain control over House committees and legislative priorities, giving them greater authority to scrutinize the administration and challenge Republican policies.

Republicans, meanwhile, are beginning to assess how they lost competitive districts that previously helped sustain their congressional majority.

Huizenga’s defeat stands out because of his lengthy tenure and the district’s established Republican voting base.

The Michigan congressman had survived numerous election cycles, including periods of Democratic strength, before losing to McCann in Tuesday’s contest.

Although election officials must still complete the certification process, the Associated Press has projected McCann as the winner.

After more than 15 years representing Michigan in Washington, Huizenga is preparing to leave Congress as Democrats celebrate another pickup in their expanding House majority.
