NEW: Dem Leadership Fight Explodes As Abdul El-Sayed Breaks With Schumer

Michigan Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed and several other newly elected Democratic senators have declined to commit to supporting Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for continued leadership of the Senate Democratic caucus following the party’s gains in the 2026 midterm elections, in which Democrats secured a large majority in the chamber.

During his primary campaign for Michigan’s open Senate seat, El-Sayed, a progressive candidate, differentiated himself from establishment figures on the leadership question. “If you’re Chuck Schumer, I’m dangerous,” he said.

El-Sayed publicly backed Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) as an alternative, saying while introducing the senator at a campaign event, “If I have anything to do about it, the next Senate majority leader — Chris Van Hollen.”

He further explained his reasoning for backing Van Hollen in a statement to the New York Post. “Look, at the end of the day, the current minority leader has given all of us ample reason to question whether or not he would be our best bet heading into a cycle where we might have the majority, and I think there’s absolutely room for change.” He described Van Hollen as “an amazing majority leader” and “perfect” for the position.

Following his general-election victory on Tuesday, El-Sayed again declined to pledge support for Schumer in interviews the following day. In remarks to the Associated Press, he stated, “I do believe we need new leadership and I think people are hungry for it.”

On NBC’s TODAY show, he said, “We need action, we need leadership toward that action, and I’m interested to see, working with the rest of our caucus, what options we’ve got.” He added, “A vote is a choice between two or more options, and I’m going to vote for the option that gives me the best chance at getting money out of politics, putting money in pockets, and passing ‘Medicare for All.’”

El-Sayed joins other Democratic senators-elect who have expressed similar reservations. Illinois Senator-elect Juliana Stratton, through a spokesperson, said she will not support Schumer and called for new leadership. “I’m not supporting Schumer,” Kansas Senator-elect Adam Hamilton told CNN back in September. “We need new leadership. We need new younger leadership… In Kansas, Chuck Schumer’s a liability for Democrat,” he added.

Main Senator-elect Troy Jackson and Minnesota Senator-elect Peggy Flanagan have also called for a change in leadership.
