NFL Legend Passes Away At 79

Bob Heinz, a two-time Super Bowl champion who helped power the Miami Dolphins through the NFL’s only perfect season, has died at 79.

The former defensive tackle died Oct. 31 in Fresno, California, his family confirmed. Heinz had been diagnosed with heart failure four years earlier, although his death was attributed to natural causes, according to the Miami Herald.

Heinz was a cornerstone of Miami’s legendary No-Name Defense, the hard-nosed unit that helped the Dolphins dominate the NFL under Hall of Fame coach Don Shula during the early 1970s.

The Dolphins paid tribute to their former star following news of his passing.

“Bob was a member of the 1972 Perfect Team, a two-time Super Bowl champion and a key part of Miami’s legendary No-Name Defense,” the Dolphins said in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, loved ones and former teammates.”

Heinz played a critical role in one of professional football’s greatest achievements.

In 1972, the Dolphins went undefeated throughout the regular season and playoffs, finishing 17-0 and defeating the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII.

More than five decades later, Miami remains the only NFL franchise to complete an entire season without a loss or tie.

Heinz helped anchor the defensive line alongside Manny Fernandez, Bill Stanfill and Vern Den Herder, forming a relentless front that frustrated opposing offenses.

The defense finished the 1972 season ranked first in the league in points and yards allowed, establishing itself as one of the most formidable units in football.

Miami returned to the Super Bowl the following season, defeating the Minnesota Vikings to secure consecutive championships.

For Heinz, the back-to-back titles cemented his place in NFL history.

Born in Milwaukee in 1947, Heinz moved to California during his teenage years and attended Delta College before continuing his athletic career at the University of the Pacific.

He excelled in both football and track before the Dolphins selected him in the second round of the 1969 NFL Draft.

Miami struggled during his rookie season, but the franchise’s fortunes changed dramatically when Shula became head coach in 1970.

Within two years, the Dolphins had emerged as the most dominant team in professional football.

Heinz spent nine seasons with Miami, appearing in 109 games and recording nine sacks. He also played in 11 postseason contests, starting 10 and registering 2.5 sacks.

His NFL career concluded in 1978 following a brief two-game stint with Washington.

Heinz’s accomplishments extended beyond the professional ranks. In 1988, the University of the Pacific inducted him into its athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of his collegiate achievements.

But those closest to him remembered more than his success on the football field.

His family described a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with loved ones, listening to Jimmy Buffett and cheering for the San Francisco Giants.

His obituary also recalled his sense of humor and lifelong attachment to Miami’s undefeated season.

“He will be remembered for his friendship, his sense of humor, and his deep love for those closest to him,” the obituary read. “He enjoyed a good cigar and bourbon, the music of Jimmy Buffett, cheering on the San Francisco Giants, and rooting against any NFL team attempting perfection.”

Heinz is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol, their three children and two grandchildren.

A private family service is planned.

Rather than sending flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Miami Dolphins Foundation in his memory.

Heinz’s death marks the loss of another member of the historic Dolphins dynasty, whose undefeated 1972 campaign remains unmatched in NFL history.

More than half a century after helping Miami capture consecutive championships, Heinz leaves behind two Super Bowl rings and a permanent place in one of football’s greatest teams.
