Democrat Threat To ‘Lawyer Up’ Hilariously Backfires

Harvard Law School professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz speculated that broad threats from Democrats to investigate their Republican opponents could backfire if any legal action comes to pass.

Following the 2026 midterm elections, in which Democrats secured control of the House of Representatives, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), immediately told Republicans and Trump Administration officials to “Lawyer up.” Garcia is currently the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee and the incoming chairman come January.

Garcia indicated that the committee would examine the Trump family’s business dealings, Department of Homeland Security and Immigration, specifically Customs Enforcement (ICE) practices, and the handling of disclosure on the Jeffrey Epstein case.

In subsequent interviews, Garcia described the election results as providing a mandate for accountability and stated that the first priority would involve the Trump family and allegations of corruption. He referenced specific examples involving members of the family and administration officials, and he noted bipartisan interest in further Epstein-related inquiries.

POLL: Did You Vote Republican In The Midterms?

Dershowitz addressed the statement during an appearance on Newsmax’s The Record with Greta Van Susteren. “It’s Lavrentiy Beria to Stalin: ‘Show me the man and I’ll find you the crime,’” Dershowitz said. “What the chairman is saying is, we don’t really care whether or not people violated the law. We now have the power, and we’re going after you. And you better get lawyers.”

He went on to characterize the statement as the latest example of “law fare” advanced by the left. “This is called lawfare. It’s something the Democrats have done for a long time. It resulted in an unconstitutional and improper conviction of Donald Trump, which I think will be reversed on appeal. But what we’re seeing is a renewed threat to use lawfare as a way of going after your political enemies,” Dershowitz continued.

On the potential legal consequences of the public statement, Dershowitz said, “And I think what might be used by courts if there are proceedings and if they are challenged in court, the chairman’s statement will be obvious evidence of a motivation by Democrats to get Republicans.”
