Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed took a personal swipe at President Trump’s marriage during a CNN appearance Sunday, suggesting the president and first lady Melania Trump have a troubled relationship while contrasting it with his own.
The comments came one day after Trump posted a side-by-side image on social media showing himself and Melania alongside El-Sayed and his wife, Sarah Jukaku. The post was captioned, “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s (sic).”
Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” El-Sayed responded by turning the conversation toward the Trumps’ marriage.
“Actually, Sarah and I like each other,” El-Sayed told host Jake Tapper. “I don’t know about the first lady and the president, but, from what I have heard, it’s a bit of a rocky road.”
Critics argue El-Sayed’s claim about the President and the First Lady’s relationship is baseless.
Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive who narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in last week’s Michigan Democratic Senate primary, also mocked Trump’s post while arguing the two couples represented competing visions of America.
“Yeah, he’s right — you’ve got two different visions of America — one in which your overlords are two people who don’t like each other but joined in the interest of making billions of dollars off of you,” El-Sayed told Tapper.

“Or two people who genuinely love each other, enjoyed some pancakes together, want to come together to build the kind of America where they can raise a family, and know that that family is going to have the good things,” El-Sayed added.
He went on to argue that Americans are struggling under current economic conditions, pointing to the cost of groceries and gasoline while questioning whether parents can still tell their children they will have a better future than previous generations.
Trump and Melania have been married since 2005 and share one son, Barron.
El-Sayed and Jukaku, both physicians, married in 2006 after meeting as students at the University of Michigan. They have two daughters, Emmalee and Serene, and live in Ann Arbor.
If elected in November, Abdul El-Sayed would become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.
