BREAKING: Embattled Democrat Resigns From Congress

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) announced Tuesday that she is resigning from Congress effective immediately, stepping down as she faces a growing ethics scandal and separate federal criminal charges that had placed her political future in serious doubt.

The surprise resignation came in a public statement released just hours after the House Ethics Committee held a sanctions hearing to determine what punishment it would recommend following a sweeping investigation into the South Florida lawmaker.

“I hereby resign from the 119th Congress, effective immediately,” Cherfilus-McCormick wrote in the statement.

She blasted the process as unfair and accused investigators of trampling on her rights.

“This was not a fair process,” she wrote. “I will not stand by and pretend that this has been anything other than a witch hunt.”

Cherfilus-McCormick also claimed the Ethics Committee denied her new attorney’s request for more time to prepare a defense while a criminal indictment remains pending. The resignation marks a dramatic downfall for the Florida Democrat, who had been at the center of one of the most serious ethics controversies currently facing Congress.

In March, the House Ethics Committee concluded that Cherfilus-McCormick committed 25 violations of House rules and ethical standards after a lengthy probe. Investigators said many of the allegations were proven by “clear and convincing evidence.”

The case centered on accusations that she improperly financed her political rise, failed to disclose payments, and misused campaign or congressional resources in violation of House standards. The sanctions hearing held Tuesday was expected to determine whether the committee would recommend penalties ranging from reprimand or censure to expulsion from the House, which would have required a two-thirds vote of the chamber.

Her resignation appears to end that process before a final House showdown could occur. The ethics case also overlapped with a separate federal criminal prosecution.

In November 2025, federal prosecutors charged Cherfilus-McCormick and co-defendants with allegedly stealing $5 million in COVID-19 relief funds meant for her family’s healthcare business, then laundering or redirecting portions of that money to boost her 2021 congressional campaign. According to prosecutors, the indictment included allegations of theft of government funds, wire fraud, money laundering, and campaign-related misconduct.

Cherfilus-McCormick pleaded not guilty and repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

Pressure on the congresswoman had intensified in recent weeks. Democratic Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) publicly called for her resignation after the ethics findings became public, while multiple reports indicated House Democrats were prepared to support expulsion if recommended by the committee. The scale of the ethics investigation was unusually large. Reports said investigators issued 59 subpoenas, conducted 28 interviews, and reviewed more than 33,000 documents during the probe.

Despite the mounting pressure, Cherfilus-McCormick maintained she still had support in her district and included a message to constituents in her resignation statement.

“To my constituents, it has been the honor of my life fighting for you in the U.S. House of Representatives,” she wrote. “Thank you for standing with me and fighting alongside me. This fight is far from over.”

Her departure now creates a vacancy in Florida’s 20th Congressional District, setting up a special election in one of the state’s safest Democratic seats.
