Rep. Ilhan Omar’s former husband has revealed that he is gay, adding another twist to the long-running controversy surrounding the Minnesota Democrat’s marriage history and allegations that she entered a sham marriage to help him obtain immigration benefits.
Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who legally married Omar in 2009, publicly identified himself as gay in an academic paper published in August, according to TMZ.
The disclosure comes as Omar faces renewed questions about her former marriage, including allegations that Elmi is actually her brother.
Those allegations have never been conclusively proven, and Omar has repeatedly denied engaging in marriage or immigration fraud.
Elmi, now a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol in England, made the revelation while discussing his academic work examining violence against LGBTQ people in Kenya.
In his paper, titled “Out in the Field: Notes on Researching Queer Violence in Kenya,” Elmi described how his personal identity influenced his research.
“As a gay man of the East African diaspora, my fieldwork was never neutral,” Elmi wrote.
The disclosure marks a rare public development involving Elmi, who has largely remained outside the political spotlight despite years of controversy surrounding his relationship with Omar.

While Elmi’s sexuality does not establish that the marriage was fraudulent, the revelation has brought fresh attention to questions about the circumstances surrounding their relationship.
Omar and Elmi married in 2009, but their relationship ended several years later. Elmi reportedly left Minnesota in 2012, and the couple finalized their divorce in 2017.
POLL: Does Ilhan Omar Belong In Congress?
Critics have long alleged that Omar married Elmi, a British citizen, to help him secure legal immigration status in the United States.
More controversially, some have claimed that Elmi is Omar’s biological brother, an accusation the congresswoman has consistently rejected.
According to the New York Post, an acquaintance of Omar’s former husband, Ahmed Hirsi, claimed Hirsi had privately identified Elmi as Omar’s brother from London.
The acquaintance further alleged that Omar’s marriage to Elmi was arranged for immigration purposes while she remained married to Hirsi under Islamic law.
Those claims remain unverified, and no publicly disclosed evidence has conclusively established that Omar and Elmi are siblings.
The congresswoman’s complicated marriage history has nevertheless remained a source of political controversy throughout her congressional career.
Omar previously maintained a relationship with Hirsi, with whom she shares children, before legally marrying Elmi.
Her subsequent divorce from Elmi and later marriage to Hirsi have repeatedly drawn scrutiny from political opponents who question the timeline of those relationships.
The latest revelation comes amid reports that federal investigators are examining possible immigration fraud connected to Omar’s past marriage.
According to TMZ, an earlier investigation into the alleged arrangement reportedly stalled because potential criminal charges fell outside the applicable statute of limitations.
However, the existence of an investigation does not establish that Omar committed a crime, and no criminal finding against her was identified in the report.
Omar has continued pushing back against the allegations as questions about her former husband resurface.
During an October appearance on MS NOW, the Minnesota Democrat was asked whether Elmi could be related to her.
“Not to my knowledge,” Omar responded.
The answer has attracted attention among critics seeking additional information about her family background, although it does not establish that the longstanding allegations are accurate.
Elmi’s academic paper provides new information about how he publicly identifies himself, but it offers no evidence that his marriage to Omar was arranged for immigration purposes.
Nor does identifying as gay establish that a previous heterosexual marriage was fraudulent.
For now, the central questions surrounding the former couple’s relationship remain unresolved.
What is documented is that Omar and Elmi married in 2009, separated years later and finalized their divorce in 2017.
Elmi’s latest public disclosure comes through his academic research, while the allegations surrounding his former marriage to the Democratic congresswoman remain unproven.
