Sen. Mitch McConnell is heading home after nearly two months away from public life following a serious fall that sidelined the longtime Kentucky Republican.
McConnell announced Thursday that he has been discharged from a rehabilitation facility and will continue recovering from home after suffering a fall at his Kentucky residence in mid-June that left him briefly unconscious and hospitalized. During his recovery, he also developed a mild case of pneumonia but did not suffer a stroke, heart attack, or broken bones, according to previous updates from his office.
“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff,” he said, referring to his wife, Elaine Chao.
The 84-year-old senator said he will spend the Senate’s upcoming state work period recovering at home rather than returning to Capitol Hill immediately.

“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business,” he said.
McConnell has not appeared publicly since the June accident, missing weeks of Senate votes while recovering first in the hospital and then at a rehabilitation center. His prolonged absence fueled growing questions about his health, with his office later revealing that the fall left him briefly unconscious and required extensive rehabilitation.
Although he’s now back home, it remains unclear when McConnell will be physically cleared to resume voting in the Senate. His office has said he plans to remain engaged in legislative work through his staff while continuing intensive physical therapy.
McConnell, the former Senate Republican leader, announced earlier that he will retire when his current term expires in January 2027, ending a decades-long career in the upper chamber.
