President Trump abruptly pulled the plug on a planned signing ceremony for a bipartisan housing bill on Wednesday, declaring he won’t put pen to paper until Congress sends him the SAVE America Act.
The surprise move throws fresh pressure on Senate Republicans and escalates Trump’s push for legislation aimed at tightening voter eligibility requirements.
“Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
The decision highlights a growing standoff between Trump and Senate Republicans over the SAVE America Act, which has become a major priority for the president.
Trump has publicly urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune to eliminate the filibuster to clear a path for the measure’s passage. Thune has so far resisted those calls.
The housing legislation had cleared both chambers of Congress with overwhelming, veto-proof support, setting the stage for what was expected to be a routine signing ceremony.
If Trump declines to sign the bill and Congress formally adjourns within the next 10 days, the measure could be blocked through a pocket veto.
Congress is scheduled to begin a two-week recess on Friday. However, lawmakers are not expected to formally adjourn, as Senate leaders plan to hold pro-forma sessions during the break.
