Bruce Willis’ Family Issues Emotional Health Update

Bruce Willis remains “very present” with his family as the Hollywood legend continues battling frontotemporal dementia, according to an emotional new update from his wife, Emma Heming Willis.

Heming Willis opened up about life with the 71-year-old “Die Hard” star during an interview for the new MS NOW series “Because We Care with Richard Lui,” describing the disease as devastating while stressing that the family still shares meaningful moments together.

“We have still so many beautiful moments of joy and connection, and I think that’s really important to share because I think there’s such a negative narrative around dementia,” Heming Willis tells Lui in the clip, referencing the star’s initial diagnosis aphasia (which turned into frontotemporal dementia) in 2023. “We need to be careful and reframe that. When we think about that or don’t want to talk about dementia and put it in a corner, the person living with the disease and their caregiver aren’t seen, they aren’t supported.”

Willis’ family first revealed that the actor had been diagnosed with aphasia before later announcing that his condition had progressed to frontotemporal dementia.

Heming Willis said the diagnosis has forced the family to adjust to a new reality, but she rejected the idea that dementia has erased every joyful part of their lives.

She said “it’s important to know that it’s hard and it’s a terrible disease, but we have so many moments of joy and connection that aren’t your norm, but it’s okay.”

She adds of the family: “We’ve learned to adapt and show up for Bruce.”

Willis and Heming Willis married in 2009 after meeting at a Los Angeles gym. They share daughters Mabel and Evelyn.

The actor also has three daughters, Rumer, Scout and Tallulah, with ex-wife Demi Moore, who has remained close to Bruce Willis and has joined other members of the family in publicly supporting him throughout his health battle.

Willis recently made a rare public appearance during daughter Tallulah’s wedding weekend in August.

“A tender moment with my dad and Justin at the start of wedding weekend,” Tallulah wrote in a caption accompanying a photo of Willis and her husband.

Heming Willis has previously explained that her husband may not always understand the extent of his condition because of a neurological symptom associated with dementia known as anosognosia.

“I think they think this is their normal. That’s not for everybody. There’s this term — this neurological condition that comes with FTD and other types of dementia — called anosognosia, where your brain can’t identify what’s happening to it,” Emma said on the Conversations With Cam podcast. “People think this might be denial, they don’t want to go to the doctor because they’re like, ‘I’m fine’ — this is where the anosognosia comes into play. It’s not denial, it’s just that their brain is changing. This is a part of the disease.”

Despite the brutal diagnosis, Heming Willis has continued emphasizing connection, family and caregiving rather than allowing the disease to completely define her husband’s life.

Her interview is part of a larger series focused on caregivers and the often overlooked challenges faced by families supporting loved ones with serious illnesses.

For the Willis family, that means continuing to rally around the beloved action star while cherishing the moments of recognition, happiness and connection that remain.
