Coca-Cola Faces Boycott Calls After Internet Uncovers Anti-Christian Bias

Coca-Cola’s online personalized can service is facing intense scrutiny after social media users documented inconsistencies in its automated content filter.

The tool, available through the Coca-Cola Store website, allows customers to create custom messages on cans for a fee. Videos and tests shared online showed the system rejecting certain phrases — including faith-based messages — while accepting others, which prompted allegations of anti-Christian bias.

Content creator Ryan Haff posted screen recordings of live tests on the site. In one demonstration, the phrase “the devil is king” was accepted and appeared in a digital preview. Entering “Jesus is king” produced an immediate rejection, however.

Haff also tested “Satan is good,” which was approved, while “Jesus is good” was rejected. Additional trials showed acceptance of “Jesus is bad” and “Jesus is evil.” In a follow-up video, “I love Satan” proceeded, “I love Jesus” was blocked, and “I hate Jesus” was approved.

Similar results were reported for “Allah is King,” which advanced to preview status. Other Christian-related terms such as “Holy Trinity,” “Virgin Mary,” and “Holy Spirit” were also rejected, with the site citing restrictions on religious figures.

“The name or phrase you’ve submitted is not permitted. Names and phrases may not be permitted if they belong to a business, organization, celebrity, public figure, school, team or other trademark, are religious or political in nature, or could be considered inappropriate or unsuitable for other reasons,” a rejection message read in a large number of recorded rejections.

“We worked hard to get this right,” the message added in additional tests. Separate tests by others found rejections for “Jesus is Lord,” “Make America Great,” and “White Lives Matter,” while phrases such as “Atheist Pride,” “Pedophile Pride,” and “Defund the Police” generated previews. Ethnic pride terms like “Asian pride,” “Indian pride,” and “Hispanic pride” were accepted in some recordings, while “White pride” was not, according to an analysis from Fox News.

Coca-Cola’s official guidelines, as stated on its website and in prior communications, reserve the right to deny names or phrases on customized products. “Coca‑Cola reserves the right to deny any names or phrases on customized bottles, customized cans or merchandise. Oftentimes, verbiage is declined due to double meanings or cultural and religious sensitivities,” an FAQ section on the company’s website reads.

The company did not issue a broad public statement specifically addressing the recent videos, though a representative acknowledged that feedback had been received. The employee blamed the inconsistent denials stemmed from a “technical issue” and that work was underway to address it. Following the online attention, Coca-Cola disabled the preview feature and paused new personalized product orders.

As of this report, the personalization tool remains temporarily disabled pending review.
