Cracker Barrel Fans Outraged After Major Change

Cracker Barrel built its name on biscuits, gravy, rocking chairs and Southern nostalgia.

That is why loyal customers are still furious when the chain quietly cuts the comfort-food classics that made them show up in the first place.

Fans have spent years begging the Tennessee-based restaurant to bring back discontinued favorites, including black-eyed peas, fried haddock, red-eye gravy, fried chicken livers and the once-beloved Sunrise Sampler breakfast platter.

The Sunrise Sampler remains one of the most painful losses for longtime diners.

The breakfast plate combined eggs, grits, fried apples, hash brown casserole, sausage, bacon, country ham and biscuits with gravy.

For customers who wanted a little bit of everything without turning breakfast into a math problem, it was the order.

“I noticed a while back that Cracker Barrel removed the GOAT of all breakfasts, the Sunrise Sampler, from the menu,” Josh Cooper, owner of Cooper’s Next Level BBQ in Tallahassee, Florida, told Fox News Digital. “You used to get a little bit of everything without breaking the bank.”

Cooper said customers can still recreate the meal, but only by ordering the items separately.

That turns what used to be a simple, affordable breakfast into a much pricier plate.

“Now, in order to get that same teaser touch from the Sunrise Sampler, you have to order it all à la carte, which costs around $25 for the same great meal,” he said. “Blasphemy!”

Fox News Digital reached out to Cracker Barrel for comment.

The menu frustration comes after Cracker Barrel already angered its core customers with a failed attempt to modernize the brand.

Last year, the company faced backlash over a short-lived logo redesign and restaurant makeover that critics said stripped away the chain’s old-country identity.

The push was part of a broader $700 million overhaul across more than 660 restaurants, including a revamped menu and decluttered dining rooms.

Cracker Barrel reversed course after the backlash, but the damage to customer trust lingered.

Last week, the company announced that CEO Julie Masino would step down Aug. 10.

David Deno, the former CEO of Bloomin’ Brands, is set to replace her.

For many longtime customers, the issue was never just a logo.

It was the sense that corporate leadership was trying to sand down the very things that made Cracker Barrel different.

Cooper said restaurants should understand the emotional bond diners have with longtime menu staples.

People are “asking for comfort and nostalgia.”

“The reality is that nostalgia matters. And when you remove popular items without controlling the narrative or managing customers’ expectations, you are bound to have upset patrons,” he said.

“Whether it’s due to rising food costs, kitchen timing or any other reason, it’s important to communicate with the people who put you on the map in the first place. Communication matters.”

Rachel Love, a self-described Cracker Barrel enthusiast from Tennessee, said she wants black-eyed peas back on the menu.

“I absolutely loved the black-eyed peas, and I’m so glad they’re getting some attention,” Love told Fox News Digital. “They were one of my favorite sides and always felt like such a classic part of the Cracker Barrel experience.”

Love said she also hopes the chain revives its baked apple dumpling, calling it “the perfect comfort dessert” for a restaurant built around old-fashioned atmosphere.

The appeal, she said, is bigger than one side dish or dessert.

“People aren’t just asking for old menu items — they’re asking for the comfort and nostalgia that came with them,” she said.

“Sometimes bringing back one classic dish means more to loyal customers than introducing several new ones.”

That is the lesson Cracker Barrel keeps learning the hard way.

Its customers do not want another sleek chain chasing restaurant trends.

They want the front porch, the country store, the old menu staples and the feeling that the place still remembers who made it successful.

Bring back the sides.

And stop treating nostalgia like a problem to be fixed.
