Democrats Begin Turning On Chuck Schumer Just Hours After Election Victory

The Democratic Party’s election night celebrations are already giving way to an internal leadership fight, with newly elected Minnesota Sen. Peggy Flanagan publicly calling for Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to be replaced just one day after the 2026 midterm elections.

Flanagan, a progressive Democrat who won her Senate race Tuesday, wasted little time signaling that she wants a change at the top of her party’s Senate leadership. Her comments represent an early challenge to Schumer as Democrats prepare for a new Congress.

“I think it’s time for a new leadership,” Flanagan declared Wednesday, making clear that her party’s electoral success does not necessarily translate into support for its longtime Senate leader.

“I would just say this, I am tremendously grateful for Chuck Schumer’s leadership and what he has done over the last many years,” Flanagan said. “And I think it is time for new leadership.”

Flanagan framed her position as part of a broader generational and ideological shift within the Democratic Party, arguing that voters had delivered a message extending beyond individual candidates.

“One of the things that we heard last night, resoundingly, across the country is that we are in a point of a new movement in this country,” she continued.

The Minnesota Democrat also pointed to the growing influence of candidates who rejected corporate political action committee contributions, suggesting that the party’s future should be shaped by lawmakers less dependent on traditional fundraising networks.

“Many of us were elected, who refused corporate PAC money, who are beholden only to the the people who elected us and are ready to fight for bold change,” she said. “And so I think it’s time for a new leadership. And I’m eager to work in partnership with my new colleagues to get that done.”

“When it comes to exactly who that is, I can’t tell you that, but I think that people are ready for new voices and new leadership in the Senate caucus.”

The comments come as Republicans are undergoing their own leadership shakeup following Tuesday’s election losses.

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced Wednesday that he would not seek the House minority leader position in the next Congress after Republicans lost control of the chamber. His decision opened the door for House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise to launch competing bids for the top Republican leadership post.

While Johnson is voluntarily stepping aside from leadership, Schumer now faces public pressure from within his own party despite Democrats’ election victories.

Schumer has led Senate Democrats since 2017, succeeding the late Harry Reid. His tenure has spanned multiple presidential administrations, changes in congressional control and repeated disagreements between the party’s progressive and establishment wings.

Flanagan is also not the only incoming Democrat to oppose Schumer’s continued leadership. Several newly elected Democratic senators have expressed similar positions, suggesting the calls for change extend beyond Minnesota.

However, Schumer has indicated that he intends to remain in charge, expressing confidence that his Democratic colleagues will support him in the upcoming leadership elections.

The senator-elect’s comments do not mean Schumer has lost his position. Senate Democrats select their leader through an internal caucus vote, and removing him would require sufficient support from fellow senators.
