Miles Sanders, a veteran NFL running back who is currently a free agent, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance and careless driving following an incident on June 8 in Churchill Borough, Pennsylvania.
Churchill Borough police responded around 4:30 a.m. to reports of a vehicle stopped motionless in the middle of William Penn Highway near the intersection with Beulah Road, approximately 10 miles outside Pittsburgh. Officers found Sanders in the driver’s seat of a silver Lexus SUV, slumped over. Multiple attempts were required to wake him.
According to the criminal complaint, he appeared to be in and out of consciousness, extremely lethargic, and unable or unwilling to answer questions.
Once Sanders exited the vehicle, officers noted glassy or glossy eyes and the odor of alcohol on his breath. The complaint states that he acknowledged drinking earlier that day. Officers then administered standardized field sobriety tests, during which Sanders showed multiple signs of impairment, according to the complaint.
Sanders was taken into custody at the scene and upon searching his vehicle, police recovered a sealed package of suspected marijuana.

A misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence and a summary charge of careless driving were filed by summons the week before the news became public. Reports of the scheduled preliminary hearing date vary, with some court-record references listing September 23 and others listing October 28.
Sanders’ attorney, Phil DiLucente, issued a brief statement. “This is a private matter that has not even reached the preliminary hearing stage and there will be no further comment,” he said.
Sanders grew up in Penn Hills and graduated from Woodland Hills High School, where he was a highly recruited running back. He played three seasons at Penn State from 2016 to 2018 before entering the NFL Draft. Selected in the second round by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019, he spent four seasons with the team and later played for the Carolina Panthers. In 2025 he appeared in four games for the Dallas Cowboys before season-ending knee and ankle injuries.
