Outgoing Rep. Nancy Mace shocked supporters this week by unveiling a heavily tattooed look as she launched a new YouTube show and opened up about the personal turmoil she says drove her to get the ink.
Mace, R-S.C., showed off tattoos covering both arms while promoting “Get Maced,” a new online program where she plans to weigh in on politics and the news of the day.
The 48-year-old Republican had revealed earlier this year that she got nine tattoos in rapid succession, but she had largely kept them covered in public until now.
Mace said in February that the tattoos were tied to a difficult stretch in her personal and political life, including staff departures, the breakup of her engagement and other painful experiences.
She described the tattoos as a way to reclaim control over her body and identity.
“So my story is I am totally broken,” she told Politico earlier this year.
“I have PTSD over what I’ve been through.”

Mace has also spoken publicly about alleged sexual assault and molestation she says she experienced during her life, along with a strained relationship with her father.
Earlier this year, she sought the Republican nomination for governor of South Carolina but finished fifth in the primary.
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson ultimately won the GOP nomination after a runoff. Mace had previously accused Wilson of failing to properly address sexual assault allegations she made against her former fiancé and others.
After Sen. Lindsey Graham died last month from heart problems, Mace briefly considered a U.S. Senate run before deciding against it.

She has since endorsed fellow Republican Rep. Ralph Norman in the race.
The dramatic new look quickly spread across social media, where users reacted with a mix of disbelief, mockery and confusion.
“What the f—,” a user named Joe simply wrote on X.
“This is real,” lefty influencer Keith Edwards gasped.
“She’s ready to make even more poor decisions in her 50s,” another user chided.
“We’re living in a simulation,” activist Shannon Watts quipped on X.
Mace has long been one of the more unpredictable figures in Republican politics, frequently drawing headlines for fiery floor speeches, clashes with colleagues and intensely personal public disclosures.
Now, with her congressional career nearing its end, she appears to be pivoting toward media and commentary rather than stepping out of the spotlight.
The tattoos may be the most visible sign yet of that reinvention, but Mace’s own explanation makes clear they were also tied to a turbulent period she says left her deeply scarred.
