Iconic Singer Dies After 40-Year Health Battle

Alan Osmond, the eldest of the Osmond brothers who helped drive the family act to teen-idol fame, died Monday night at his Utah home. He was 76.

A family spokesperson said Osmond died at 8:30 p.m. with his wife, Suzanne, and their eight sons by his side, according to KUTV. He had lived with multiple sclerosis for roughly 40 years. The exact cause of death was not disclosed.

As the oldest sibling in the famous entertainment family, Osmond was a steady force behind the scenes even as younger brother Donny and sister Marie became the best-known faces of the brand. During the Osmonds’ peak in the 1960s and 1970s, Alan helped steer the group’s sound and direction, contributing as a songwriter and musician on piano and guitar.

The Osmonds became TV regulars on variety shows and toured nationwide as their popularity surged, turning a family act into a full-blown pop phenomenon.

Brother Merrill Osmond marked Alan’s death with an emotional Facebook tribute, recalling a recent visit.

“Two days before my brother, Alan, passed, I was blessed to sit quietly with him. We talked as brothers do, heart to heart. He was struggling, but when I shared a joke or two, he found the strength to chuckle… and then he smiled,” he wrote.

Merrill said Alan left him with a final request tied to the brothers’ work.

“In a tender moment I will never forget, he leaned close and whispered something into my ear. He said, “Merrill, you and I worked side by side. We created, we produced, we directed… we gave our hearts to The Plan with Wayne. Please… do something with it. Let people know what we were trying to say.” I want you to know, his request will be honored,” Merrill wrote.

He continued, “My brother has now stepped into the presence of our Father in Heaven with honor and peace. His life was not measured in years, but in love, sacrifice, and purpose.”

Merrill ended with a message to fans and loved ones: “So please, don’t let your hearts be heavy. Don’t weep for him. Rejoice, knowing that your brother, your friend, your hero is no longer in pain. He is free. He is whole. He is home.”

Away from the stage, Alan Osmond also built a legacy in philanthropy. He helped create the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon, which has raised more than $2 billion for children’s hospitals, and founded the One Heart Foundation to support orphans.

Osmond is survived by Suzanne, his wife of 51 years, and their sons Michael, Nathan, Doug, David, Scott, Jon, Alex and Tyler. He is also survived by 30 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
