The Israeli military on Sunday conducted strikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut’s southern suburbs, known as Dahiyeh, in response to projectile fire from Lebanon into northern Israel. The action occurred as negotiations between the United States and Iran approached a potential memorandum of understanding aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict.
According to Israeli officials, Hezbollah launched three projectiles toward northern Israel earlier in the day. The Israeli military described this as a ceasefire violation. In retaliation, Israeli forces targeted what they identified as Hezbollah infrastructure.
An Associated Press photographer at the scene observed a five-story apartment building with shops on the ground floor sustaining damage, particularly to the lower levels. Residents in the area were seen leaving following the strikes.
“The IDF has now attacked terrorist targets of the Hezbollah terrorist organization in the Dahiyeh neighborhood of Beirut, in response to Hezbollah’s firing into Israeli territory,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a joint statement.
Israeli officials further stated that a “precise” strike was carried out on a Hezbollah command center. “Israel will not tolerate firing into its territory,” Netanyahu posted on X.
This marked one of the instances of strikes reaching Beirut’s suburbs amid a period of relative calm in recent weeks, following earlier escalations. Israeli officials linked the response directly to the incoming fire, which produced audible booms and visible smoke in northern Israel but no reported casualties there.
Hezbollah has not issued an immediate public comment on the exchange as of this report.

President Donald Trump responded to the strikes by describing them as a limited exchange that should not jeopardize peace discussions. “Israel has the right to defend itself against threats, but the attack it was responding to was very small and meaningless, nobody was hurt, injured, or killed, and should not disrupt this important process,” he said.
Trump maintained focus on the US-Iran negotiations, urging restraint to support the ongoing talks. His comments positioned the Lebanon incidents as separate from the primary track involving Iran.
In a separate statement to Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst, Trump stated that the Israeli “attack on Beirut should not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran.” He then called on both sides to stand down.
The strikes came ahead of an anticipated peace deal that President Trump expected to be signed by Sunday evening. “The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL,” Trump posted on Truth Social a day earlier.
“Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly. If it doesn’t, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again,” he added.
Iranian officials have expressed a more measured view. While acknowledging progress, they have not confirmed a signing on Sunday and have described the timeline as uncertain but potentially achievable in the coming days.

The proposed understanding is reported to include a 60-day period for further technical talks on topics such as Iran’s nuclear program and related matters, alongside steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and address economic aspects.
