Texas Democrat James Talarico is facing backlash after a town hall moment involving convicted murderer Karmelo Anthony became a new flashpoint in the state’s U.S. Senate race.
The controversy erupted after video from a campaign event showed a woman raising Anthony’s case while pressing Talarico about what she described as harm against her community.
Anthony was convicted in June of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, who was stabbed in the chest during a 2025 high school track meet in Frisco, Texas.
Both teens were 17 at the time of the killing.
The case quickly became a national political and cultural fight after Anthony’s supporters claimed he acted in self-defense, a defense the jury rejected.
Now the case is being dragged into the Texas Senate race, where Republicans are accusing Talarico of being too soft on crime and too eager to appease the activist left.
At the town hall, the woman tied Anthony’s case to broader complaints about violence and injustice.
“Our people have getting killed left and right,” the woman said. “Karmelo Anthony’s case, is just a f***ing tragedy. Excuse my language. But it is. So what are we going to do to fix those harms?”
Video of the exchange drew quick anger from conservatives, who said Talarico appeared to nod along as the woman described Anthony’s conviction as a tragedy.

For Republicans, that reaction was political malpractice.
Metcalf was the victim.
Anthony was convicted by a jury.
And the case ended with a 35-year prison sentence after jurors rejected the self-defense argument.
According to trial accounts, Anthony was under a tent belonging to Metcalf’s team during the track meet before the confrontation turned deadly.
The fatal stabbing stunned the Frisco community and later fueled bitter debate over race, school safety and justice.
Talarico, a Democrat running for U.S. Senate in Texas, has already become a top Republican target as the GOP works to keep the state red and protect President Donald Trump’s America First agenda in Washington.
Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, has been among the Republicans trying to force Talarico to answer directly on the Anthony case.
The issue puts Talarico in a difficult position.
If he says the jury got it right, he risks alienating left-wing activists who view Anthony as a victim of the justice system.
If he suggests Anthony was wronged, Republicans will hammer him as siding with a convicted murderer over the family of the teen he killed.

That is why the town hall clip traveled so quickly through conservative circles.
It appeared to capture the exact kind of political trap Democrats keep walking into on crime.
The left wants to talk about systems.
Republicans want to talk about the victim.
In this case, the victim was Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old student-athlete who never came home from a track meet.
The Anthony case has already generated national outrage, with supporters and critics clashing over whether the stabbing was self-defense or murder.
A Texas jury answered that question in court.
Anthony was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
That verdict has not stopped activists from continuing to cast the case as a broader grievance.
Now Talarico has to decide whether he wants to correct that narrative or let Republicans define him by it.
In a Texas Senate race, that is not a small problem.
A Democrat who cannot clearly side with a murdered teenager over his convicted killer is handing the GOP exactly the kind of issue that moves voters.
