JUST IN: Iran Attacks U.S. Forces In Eruption Of Hostilities

Iran launched ballistic missiles at U.S. forces in Jordan on Sunday evening, according to a U.S. source cited by Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst. The strikes mark the most significant hostilities between the two sides after multiple weeks of relative calm.

Yingst reported that “Iran is attacking U.S. forces stationed in Jordan,” adding that a U.S. source familiar with the situation said there had been “no significant impacts so far” and that “nearly all incoming missiles have been intercepted at this point.”

Local media in Jordan reported explosions near the southern city of Aqaba following the launches from Iran, according to the Jerusalem Post. Aqaba lies near King Hussein International Airport and other facilities that have hosted U.S. aircraft. Separate reports identified Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Azraq, a hub used by U.S. forces, among the sites involved.

U.S. Central Command had not issued a detailed public statement on the Jordan incident at the time of initial reporting. Jordan’s armed forces have previously announced interceptions of Iranian missiles entering its airspace, often stating that debris caused no casualties or material damage on the ground.

Some impacts have been made since the conflict erupted on February 28, however, including a mid-July strike on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base that killed three U.S. service members.

Sunday’s Jordan strikes followed a U.S. attack earlier in the on Larak Island, an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz about 20 miles south of the mainland. “I can confirm that earlier today U.S. forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into Strait of Hormuz,” one U.S. official told Fox News.

U.S. Central Command spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins said IRGC forces were preparing to fire rockets that would have dispersed sea mines into the waterway. “U.S. forces are monitoring the area closely and remain prepared to protect the free flow of commerce through this essential waterway,” Hawkins added.

The IRGC said the Larak attack killed and wounded several soldiers and civilians and would be met with a “response and punishment.” IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi called the strike “a strategic and fatal mistake by the Trump regime” and said the “enemy will pay the consequences of this miscalculation in both the economic and military fields.”

Sunday’s hostilities come just days after President Donald Trump stated that all mines had been removed or detonated from international waters in the Strait of Hormuz and that Iran had been notified that any ship or boat placing new mines would be destroyed. Larak Island sits near a chokepoint where Iran has sought to inspect tanker traffic.

Trump has repeatedly stated that the United States controls the waterway and that a southern route along the Omani coast has been used for commercial traffic. Recent reports, including satellite-imagery analysis published on August 28, confirmed U.S. naval dredging and deepening of a channel near Oman’s Jazirat Musandam to create a wider, deeper passage suitable for large tankers closer to the Omani coastline. Trump has referred to use of “the southern route.”
