Army Secretary Dan Driscoll submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump on Monday, a senior U.S. official confirmed in a statement to Fox News.
According to a separate report from the Wall Street Journal, Driscoll is expected to leave the Pentagon in the coming days. The development follows earlier reports of planned departure amid months of tension with War Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Driscoll, who was confirmed for the position last February, has served as the youngest Secretary of the Army in history at age 38. A former Army officer who deployed to Iraq with the 10th Mountain Division, he later earned a law degree from Yale, worked in venture capital, and advised the Trump campaign in 2024.
During his tenure, Driscoll promoted the Army Transformation Initiative, which focused on drones, artificial intelligence, and lessons from Ukraine, and took part in Ukraine-related diplomatic efforts in late 2025.

Back in April, multiple media outlets, including Politico and the Washington Post, reported on claims of tensions between Driscoll and Secretary Hegseth. “Serving under President Trump has been the honor of a lifetime and I remain laser focused on providing America with the strongest land fighting force the world has ever seen. I have no plans to depart or resign as the Secretary of the Army,” Driscoll said in response to the reports at the time.
The Washington Post detailed disagreements over personnel, including Hegseth directing the firing of Col. David Butler, the Army public affairs chief, and blocking certain officer promotions. The Hill and other sources linked heightened friction to Hegseth’s April 2026 decision to require the early retirement of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, along with Gen. David Hodne and Maj. Gen. William Green.
Driscoll addressed George’s departure in congressional testimony. “I was in North Carolina when Gen. George was asked to put in his resignation paperwork, with my family for my kids’ spring break. When we drove back from North Carolina, I drove straight to Gen. George’s house, we walked right in, and we all gave him a hug. There is no person that has more respect for Gen. George … he was an amazing, transformational leader,” he said.
“That being said, the civilian leadership, the design of our system, is that they get to pick the leaders that they want, and we execute on those orders.”
Driscoll’s departure would leave the Army without a Senate-confirmed civilian leader at a time when the service’s top military post also remains unfilled on a permanent basis, with Gen. Christopher LaNeve serving as acting chief of staff following George’s ouster. No successor for Driscoll has been announced as of this report.
