President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would “absolutely” support prohibiting Sharia law in the United States, arguing that the country must remain governed by a single legal system.
Trump made the remarks during a live interview with conservative radio host Glenn Beck, who questioned the president about ideological movements he believes are gaining influence inside the United States. Beck specifically asked Trump whether he would push for or sign legislation aimed at barring Sharia law.
“Number one, on Sharia law, I would absolutely say that’s not this country. There’s no Sharia law. And you do have pockets of it, as you know,” Trump responded.
The president then pointed to developments in Europe, singling out London and Paris while arguing that the United States should avoid allowing a separate religious legal framework to take hold.
“And you go to London, you go to Paris. It’s almost like a second way of life. It’s ridiculous,” Trump said.
Trump told Beck that his position came down to what he described as common sense rather than political ideology.
“You and I have people that I think we’re more based on common sense than we are in ideology,” Trump said. “Good politics is all about common sense anyway.”

Trump then gave his clearest answer on the issue.
“But I would absolutely prohibit the Sharia law thing,” the president said. “And it is happening in this country a little bit. And when we see it, we take it out. And you have to take it out.”
“You have one system. We have a great system. Sometimes it’s very frustrating. But it’s the best there is that I can see,” Trump concluded.
The comments immediately placed Trump in the middle of a debate that has gained attention during the 2026 election cycle. Under the U.S. constitutional system, federal and state law remain controlling, while Americans are generally free to follow religious practices voluntarily so long as those practices do not override applicable law or constitutional protections.
The issue has also surfaced in Michigan’s closely watched U.S. Senate contest, where Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is facing Republican Mike Rogers in November. El-Sayed defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary earlier this month, setting up a general election battle expected to play an important role in determining control of the Senate.
Republicans have recently targeted El-Sayed over comments he made concerning Sharia law. Vice President JD Vance criticized the Democratic nominee last week over remarks from a 2022 Council on American-Islamic Relations banquet in which El-Sayed criticized efforts to prohibit courts from considering Sharia law.
Separately, El-Sayed’s campaign recently confirmed that he follows Sharia principles in his personal religious life after comments from a 2009 interview resurfaced. Those comments concerned his decision to obtain a Sharia-compliant mortgage. His campaign has maintained that his personal religious observance does not mean imposing religious law through government.
Trump’s comments Wednesday nevertheless marked an unusually direct statement from the president on the issue. Asked specifically whether he would back federal action against Sharia law, Trump left little ambiguity about his position.
“I would absolutely prohibit” it, Trump told Beck, adding that the United States has “one system.”
