President Donald Trump has thrust the long-running immigration fraud allegations against Rep. Ilhan Omar back into the spotlight.
Trump on Sunday shared an Aug. 11 report from Just the News headlined, “ICE refuses to disclose records on Ilhan Omar fraud probe, cites ongoing ‘enforcement proceedings.’”
The report revealed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement refused to release records related to any investigation into Omar, citing concerns that doing so could interfere with enforcement proceedings.
Omar, a Somali-born Democrat who arrived in the United States as a refugee, married Ahmed Hirsi in a Muslim ceremony in 2002. The couple had children together but did not legally marry at the time.
“You are not allowed to marry your brother.”
After reportedly separating from Hirsi, Omar legally married British-Somali national Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009. Numerous members of the Somali community have alleged that Elmi is Omar’s brother.
Omar reportedly obtained a Muslim divorce from Elmi in 2011 before reuniting with Hirsi and having another child with him in 2012. She formally divorced Elmi in 2017, according to the Center for Immigration Studies.

The Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board disclosed in 2019 that Omar and Hirsi filed joint tax returns in 2014 and 2015, while she was still legally married to Elmi.
Filing a joint tax return with someone who is not a legal spouse violates federal and state law, The Hill reported at the time.
Abdihakim Osman, who identified himself as a friend of Omar, told the Daily Mail in 2020 that Omar had acknowledged Elmi was her brother and married him to help him remain in the United States.
Omar vehemently rejected the allegations in 2016, calling them “absolutely false and ridiculous.”
She added that “insinuations that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is my brother are absurd and offensive.”
No concrete evidence, including DNA evidence, has been made public proving that Elmi is Omar’s biological brother.
The allegations gained fresh attention in December when border czar Tom Homan said the Trump administration was investigating Omar for possible immigration fraud.
Trump said the following month that the Justice Department was “looking at” the Minnesota Democrat.
Vice President JD Vance was asked in May whether Omar could face an indictment over the allegations.
“It certainly seems like something fishy is there,” Vance said, adding that it was something “the Department of Justice is looking at right now.”
Just the News filed a Freedom of Information Act request in January seeking records related to any ICE investigation into allegations of immigration fraud involving Omar.
ICE refused to release the requested information in May.
“ICE has determined that the information you requested is being withheld in full pursuant to Title 5 U.S.C. § 552(b)(7)(A). Disclosure of any responsive records at this time could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement proceedings,” the agency told Just the News.
ICE said FOIA Exemption 7(A) “applies to records or information compiled for law enforcement purposes when their release could disrupt such proceedings.”
