Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar snapped at a reporter outside an elevator in the Capitol on Tuesday after being pressed about revisions to her financial disclosures, a controversy that has fueled fresh calls from Republicans for a closer look at her filings.
LindellTV reporter Alison Steinberg confronted Omar in a hallway and referenced a prior exchange between the two before asking about the revised paperwork.
“The last time I spoke to you, you said that I was stupid for asking you about your financial disclosures, but there’s some discrepancies on there. Would you like to explain that?” Steinberg asked. “How did you make such a big mistake?”
“You are absolutely stupid for asking me anything,” Omar said, smiling.
Steinberg pressed Omar again.
“Well, what about the American people who are wondering how you made such a big mistake?” Steinberg asked.
“I have explained to the American people,” Omar said. “I have given them the explanation.”
Steinberg tried to continue.
“Do you want to tell our viewers? Because they’re—”
Omar cut her off.
“I don’t want to tell you jack sh*t, how about that?”

The exchange comes as Omar faces intensifying scrutiny over a major discrepancy in her disclosure paperwork tied to assets connected to her husband. According to reporting cited in the broader coverage of the issue, a filing associated with Omar previously listed companies co-owned by her husband with a value range as high as $6 million to $30 million before a revised version pegged the couple’s assets far lower, between $18,004 and $95,000.
Omar’s office has attributed the shift to an accounting error and has insisted the congresswoman is not a millionaire, arguing the corrected filing reflects the true numbers. Her legal team has also pushed back on allegations of wrongdoing, noting lawmakers commonly rely on professional help when completing complex financial disclosure forms.
Republicans say the scale of the change is too big to dismiss as a simple mistake. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has publicly raised the prospect of criminal exposure if a filing is knowingly false, arguing that disclosure forms are signed under penalty and are meant to give voters a clear picture of a lawmaker’s finances.
A certified public accountant who weighed in on the controversy in related coverage rejected the idea that a massive jump in net worth could slip past a lawmaker’s review, arguing that even if an accountant prepared the paperwork, the signer is ultimately responsible for what is submitted.
Omar has been dogged by campaign finance issues before. In 2019, the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board found she improperly used campaign funds for out-of-state travel and tax-related help, ordering her to repay about $3,500 to her campaign committee and pay a $500 civil penalty.
Omar has not offered additional details in response to Steinberg’s questions beyond insisting she has already explained the matter. For critics, the exchange turned a paperwork dispute into a viral moment and raised fresh questions about what changed, why it changed, and how it happened in the first place.
