NEW: Democrats Face Intense Backlash Over ‘Divisive’ Memorial Day Post

The Democratic Party and the Democratic National Committee is facing intense backlash over a Memorial Day post that leveraged the deaths of U.S. service members killed in the Iran conflict in a partisan attack against President Donald Trump.

The post in question featured photographs of the fallen service members and included text that read, in part, “We honor the American heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in Trump’s war with Iran” or similar phrasing such as “REMEMBERING THE AMERICANS WHO HAVE DIED IN TRUMP’S WAR WITH IRAN.” It was shared on platforms including X and Facebook under a number of official Democratic Party accounts.

The message drew backlash from a range of individuals, including veterans, political figures from both parties, and members of the public. Critics argued that framing the deaths in explicitly partisan terms on Memorial Day, a holiday traditionally dedicated to solemn remembrance of fallen service members without political attribution, was inappropriate.

Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), a combat veteran who lost both legs in the Iraq War, publicly condemned her own party’s post. “It is incredibly distasteful to use our heroic dead for a political attack on Memorial Day. I’m a Democrat and I condemn this post by the DNC,” she said.

Other responses highlighted that Memorial Day observances, including events at Arlington National Cemetery attended by President Trump, emphasized unity and gratitude for military service rather than contemporary political disputes.

In response to the criticism, the Democratic Party deleted the post. The removal occurred relatively quickly after the initial sharing, which observers interpreted as an effort to limit further negative attention.

No detailed public explanation from the DNC was made available regarding the decision to delete it or the process behind the original post’s creation.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of ongoing U.S. military involvement related to Iran, which has claimed the lives of 13 U.S. service members since hostilities began on February 28. While President Trump has extended the ceasefire between the two sides indefinitely, and indicated that peace talks are in the advanced stages, limited exchanges of fire have occurred and the potential for renewed hostilities remains.
