A number of elected Democrats and party strategists are becoming increasingly concerned that Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) will indeed switch parties after he laid out a scenario in which he would consider doing so.
While speaking with CNN this past weekend, Fetterman indicated that he would switch his affiliation if the party formally adopts opposition to Israel as part of its official platform. He referenced recent Democrat primaries in which candidates have taken strong positions against Israel, distinguishing between general support for Palestinians and what he described as intense opposition to Israel itself.
Fetterman elaborated on his position in an interview with NBC News, stating that placing a prohibition on U.S. aid to Israel in the party platform would cross a line for him. He emphasized that Democrats have historically supported Israel as a key ally and the only democracy in the region, and he expressed frustration with what he sees as the party turning away from that stance.
He did not specify whether he would join the Republican Party or become an independent if the condition were met.

The senator’s statements have prompted concern from a number of his colleagues and other elected officials. One Senate Democrat, who spoke with NOTUS on the condition of anonymity, stated that they are concerned about the possibility of an unexpected party switch by Fetterman. The same senator questioned whether Fetterman could prevail in a future Democrat primary in Pennsylvania.
Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) noted that he had not previously seen a similar arrangement involving joint fundraising with a member of the opposing party. Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-PA), a progressive Democrat who has expressed interest in mounting a primary challenge to Fetterman, described the fundraising partnership as problematic
Former Fetterman chief of staff Adam Jentleson suggested that a switch could occur if it positioned Fetterman to play a pivotal role in Senate dynamics, particularly in scenarios involving narrow majorities or judicial nominations. Jentleson characterized any such move as manageable for the party over the longer term.
Other Democrats quoted in the piece provided more measured responses. Senator Peter Welch (D-VT) pointed out that Fetterman has consistently voted with Democrats and maintains progressive positions, which would make alignment with Republicans difficult. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) encouraged Fetterman to remain in the caucus, noting broad alignment on most policy priorities despite differences on specific issues.
