Dr. Anthony Fauci arrived on Capitol Hill under subpoena Wednesday and almost immediately stopped answering questions.
The former face of America’s COVID response repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment as Sen. Rand Paul pressed him over pandemic-era decisions, NIH-funded research and the still-disputed origins of the virus.
The hearing grew even more tense when video circulating online appeared to show Fauci’s attorney being removed after interrupting during Paul’s questioning.
Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee he would not answer questions because he believed Republicans were trying to expose him to criminal prosecution.
In a lengthy opening statement, Fauci accused Paul of dragging him before the committee for political reasons.
“The sole reason (Sen. Paul) is calling me before this committee is to get me to say something, anything, that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words, ‘behind bars,’” Fauci said.
He continued: “His obvious obsession with calling for my prosecution has compelled me to conclude that this proceeding is nothing more than a politically motivated effort to trap me into making statements that could later be twisted or distorted into a basis for criminal charges.”
Paul, a Kentucky Republican who has battled Fauci for years over COVID origins and government-funded research, did not back down.
As questioning began, Fauci repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment rather than answer questions about the National Institutes of Health, U.S.-funded research and decisions made during the pandemic.
At one point, Paul highlighted just how far Fauci’s refusal to answer had gone.
“Let the record reflect that the witness has refused to answer whether there’s a folder in front of him based on his Fifth Amendment right.”
The exchange was a political earthquake for a man who spent the pandemic demanding that Americans trust federal health officials without hesitation.
In one tense moment, Paul kicked Fauci’s lead attorney out of the hearing, later remarking, “Let the record state that Dr. Fauci will still have the advice of the other half-a-dozen attorneys he brought along today.”

Fauci has testified before Congress more than 250 times, but Wednesday marked the first time he invoked the Fifth Amendment.
For conservatives, the image was hard to miss.
The same bureaucrat who became a cable-news fixture during lockdowns, mask fights, school closures, and vaccine mandates was now sitting before Congress and refusing to answer questions under oath.
Paul argued in his opening remarks that former President Joe Biden’s preemptive pardon of Fauci does not erase the record or stop Congress from investigating what happened.
“A pardon that protects a person from criminal prosecution doesn’t rewrite history. It does not erase documents. It does not convert a misleading statement to a truthful one, and it does not prevent Congress from establishing what happened,” Paul said.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said earlier this week that Fauci could still face legal trouble if he lied during new congressional testimony.

“There are many things that Fauci said that we know are lies, and Rand Paul presumably is going to ask him about those things, and if he lies again, then he could be subject to perjury prosecution,” Kennedy told Fox News on Monday.
President Donald Trump also weighed in before the hearing, writing on Truth Social that Fauci “made too many bad calls” during the pandemic while adding that he “didn’t let Fauci shut the Country down.”
The hearing came days after Paul released more than 1,100 pages of Fauci’s pandemic-era diary entries.
Paul has argued the diary entries raise fresh questions about the government’s COVID response, Fauci’s public statements and what officials were saying behind the scenes while Americans were living under sweeping restrictions.
Fauci has disputed that characterization.
For years, Paul has accused the NIH of helping fund risky coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology through U.S.-backed grants.
Fauci has denied that NIH funded research that created the virus responsible for the pandemic.
The origins of COVID-19 remain disputed.
U.S. intelligence agencies have reached differing conclusions, with some assessing that a lab-related incident is the most likely source while others continue to favor natural transmission.
No definitive conclusion has been reached, though the lab-leak theory has gained growing support inside parts of the U.S. government and intelligence community.
Wednesday’s hearing put all of that back on national display.
