Federal officials have issued administrative subpoenas to Twitch streamer and far-left political commentator Hasan Piker and CodePink co-founder Medea Benjamin as part of an investigation by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). The subpoenas, described as “Requests for Information” (RFIs), seek details on financial transactions, logistical arrangements, communications, and other records related to their participation in a March 2026 trip to Cuba.
The inquiry examines whether participants in the trip violated U.S. sanctions on Cuba, according to a report from Fox News. These sanctions, primarily governed by the Cuban Asset Control Regulations, generally prohibit unlicensed travel-related transactions, the export of goods or services to Cuba, and dealings with entities tied to the Cuban government, particularly those on restricted lists.
Limited exceptions exist for certain humanitarian projects, educational activities, journalism, and support for the Cuban people, provided they comply with licensing and other requirements. Violations can involve financing, coordination, or delivery of goods that benefit prohibited entities, or unauthorized contacts with Cuban government personnel.
The trip in question was organized under the “Nuestra América Convoy” (Our America Convoy), an international initiative that converged in Havana around March 21, 2026. Organizers described it as a “humanitarian effort” involving hundreds of participants from multiple countries, though it received significant criticism within the U.S.
The group was given a propaganda tour by the Cuban government, and notably stayed in a luxury hotel — which was fully powered — as the Cuban people were experiencing island-wide blackouts.

Piker and Benjamin were among U.S. participants who publicly documented their involvement. Piker — an open supporter of political violence — shared social media posts about traveling to Cuba, and both individuals have been highly supportive of Cuba’s communist regime.
The subpoenas form part of a broader federal review involving as many as 40 American citizens and numerous organizations connected to the convoy. This effort falls under interagency scrutiny by Treasury, State, and Justice Department officials examining potential sanctions compliance and related influence activities.
No charges have been filed against Piker, Benjamin, or others at this stage. The subpoenas represent an information-gathering step rather than a determination of wrongdoing. Sources told Fox News that the investigation also looks into a wider network of nonprofits and activists with reported ties to foreign funding and advocacy on issues involving Cuba and other nations.
The subpoenas come as the U.S. has increased its posture against the Cuban regime in recent weeks. President Donald Trump has authorized critical sanctions against the regime, particularly relating to fuel imports, and has dispatched a carrier group ahead of possible military action.
