NEW: Iranian Missiles Strike US Warplanes

Iranian ballistic missiles damaged several U.S. military aircraft stationed in Jordan during a major barrage this week, according to a senior American official.

The attack struck Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, where U.S. forces operate alongside Jordanian troops.

A senior U.S. official said one A-10 Warthog was hit and about eight F-15 fighter jets sustained light damage during the missile attack.

The aircraft damage was first reported by CBS News.

Despite the damage to American equipment, U.S. officials said all personnel stationed in Jordan were accounted for following the attack.

“Iran’s response was ineffective in face of integrated air and missile defenses. Iran fired missiles toward Jordan. American forces have 100% accountability at all locations in Jordan,” the U.S. official told Fox News.

Jordan’s military said its air defenses intercepted 18 of 20 ballistic missiles launched toward the country.

The remaining two missiles fell in unpopulated areas, according to Jordanian officials. No casualties were reported.

The new disclosure adds important detail to initial U.S. assessments of the strike, which emphasized that Iran had failed to inflict casualties or seriously disrupt American operations.

While personnel escaped injury, the barrage was apparently not entirely without effect.

The A-10, commonly known as the Warthog, is a heavily armored ground-attack aircraft designed to provide close air support to troops.

The F-15 is one of the Air Force’s primary fighter aircraft and has been heavily used in U.S. operations across the Middle East.

Muwaffaq Salti Air Base has become an important hub for American military operations in the region and has repeatedly drawn Iranian attention during the escalating conflict.

Iran has launched multiple missile and drone attacks against U.S. forces and American allies in recent months as Washington and Tehran trade strikes across the Middle East.

The latest barrage came amid another round of American military action against Iranian oil infrastructure and vessels tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

U.S. forces recently destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after American officials said Iran repeatedly attempted to strike a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles.

No American sailors were reported injured in those attacks.

The growing exchange of fire has increasingly put U.S. bases, aircraft and ships in the region within range of Iranian weapons, even as American and allied missile defenses continue intercepting most incoming threats.

The damage to the aircraft in Jordan shows that even a largely intercepted missile barrage can still threaten valuable U.S. military assets.
