A horrific child-abuse case out of red-state Ohio is drawing national attention after a 7-year-old special-needs boy was allegedly tortured for an extended period before being found dead and bound with duct tape inside a Cincinnati apartment.
William Michael Evans-Ellis was discovered unresponsive in a closet Aug. 6 in the city’s Oakley neighborhood.
His biological mother, Kaitlin Elizabeth Evans, 38, along with Kirby Rankin, 33, and Nessa Keaney, 23, have been charged with murder and child endangerment.
All three defendants have pleaded not guilty.
Investigators described a horrifying scene, alleging William suffered repeated beatings, blunt-force injuries, burns and other forms of abuse.
A veteran homicide detective told the court that the child was found with “a number of injuries that would indicate physical beatings, blunt force injuries.”
Authorities also suspect William was choked and held underwater during the prolonged abuse.
The case took another disturbing turn as scrutiny shifted toward the adults surrounding William and social media posts reportedly documenting the unconventional household in which he was being raised.
Evans lived with Rankin and Keaney, and the three reportedly co-parented William as part of a polyamorous household.
An investigation into the family’s online history also focused on William’s biological father, who was not charged in connection with the boy’s death.
Social media posts attributed to the father described the adults as a “polycule” and detailed the child’s interactions with different members of the household.
“The other night we did a family+polycule outing and my kiddo met my girlfriend, ‘K,’ [Kirby Rankin] for the first time,” Ellis wrote in December 2023, when William was about four years old.
Two trans-identified males have been charged in the abuse and murder of a 7 year-old boy.

A later post described the young boy referring to several adults in the household as mothers.
“kiddo has started calling for ‘mommies!’ when he needs a parent and any parent will do, and it absolutely melts my heart every time.”
Other posts reviewed as part of the investigation allegedly contained far-left political material, transgender activism and discussions about the family’s polyamorous lifestyle.
The outlet that reviewed the posts argued they also showed adults encouraging William to experiment with his identity and different names at a very young age. Those claims are separate from the murder case and have not been established by prosecutors as a motive for his death.
What investigators have alleged in court is devastating enough.
William, who had disabilities, was allegedly subjected to sustained physical abuse before his death.
His grandparents have also said the boy told them weeks earlier that he did not want to return home. They later became concerned after seeing an injury and eventually sought legal help and hired a private investigator.
But before they could intervene, police were called to the Cincinnati apartment.
William was already dead.
The case has also sparked outrage over how some media organizations initially described the defendants, with critics accusing outlets of focusing more on preferred identity terminology than the horrifying allegations involving the child.
For conservatives, the tragedy is likely to intensify an already heated debate over parental responsibility, radical gender ideology and how much influence adults should have over the identities of very young children.
But as the political questions swirl, the criminal case remains centered on something far more basic: a 7-year-old boy who authorities say endured prolonged abuse inside the very home where he should have been safest.
The three defendants remain accused of murder and child endangerment as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding William’s death.
