NEW: Trump Floats GOP Ticket For 2028

President Donald Trump suggested in a recent interview that Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio should run together on a ticket in the 2028 presidential election.

In the interview, which was conducted by the New York Post, Trump indicated that he would like to see both men share a ticket, though he did not specify which one should be at the top.

“I like them both. And I like them together,” the president said. “I don’t know how you beat them if they’re together. That would be a great team.”

Trump went on to describe Vance and Rubio as “similar in a lot of ways” with a good relationship. He added that there was time before any decision needed to be made and that the two would have to agree to such an arrangement.

“I watch them all the time, you know. I study them as they’re with each other. I find it very interesting,” the president remarked, adding that both potential candidates are “very talented.”

President Trump has repeatedly referred to Vance and Rubio as strong presidential candidates and likely successors in recent months. Much like the New York Post interview, he has refrained from committing to either one, however.

While speaking with law enforcement personnel in the Rose Garden last month, Trump polled attendees by asking, “Who likes JD Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio?” After receiving applause for both, he said it “sounds like a good ticket” and called the pairing a “dream team.”

Rubio and Vance have long been floated as potential candidates, though both have refused to commit when asked

Rubio previously sought the Republican nomination for president in 2016, but has repeatedly downplayed the prospect of another run in the near future. “I think JD Vance would be a great nominee if he decides he wants to do that,” he said when asked about his own presidential ambitions last year

Early polling for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination shows Vice President Vance maintaining a lead in most surveys and averages, while Secretary Rubio has appeared as a consistent second-place contender. According to RealClearPolling data covering polls from January 22 to April 26 the RCP Average for the Republican field stands at Vance 45.5 percent, Donald Trump Jr. 14.8 percent, Rubio 14.0 percent, and Ron DeSantis at 7.5 percent.

Rubio has maintained a base of enthusiastic supporters urging him to run, however. According to a recent poll from Atlas Intel, Rubio led the hypothetical Republican primary field with 45.4 percent support to Vance’s 29.6 percent, with DeSantis trailing in a distant third with 11.2 percent. This marked the first poll in which Rubio has led Vance, contrasting with other surveys from the period that showed Vance ahead by wide margins.
