Ryan Clark is out at ESPN after more than a decade with the network, becoming one of the highest-profile casualties in a fresh wave of layoffs tied to Disney’s ongoing cost-cutting efforts.
The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand first reported that ESPN fired Ryan Clark on Monday, with the former NFL star receiving the news while he was appearing on “NFL Live.”
According to the report, Clark was informed during a break in the broadcast and did not return to finish the show. ESPN had reportedly planned to notify him Tuesday alongside other employees affected by the layoffs, but changed course after media inquiries raised concerns he could learn about his dismissal online before speaking with network executives.
Clark, a former Pro Bowl safety and Super Bowl champion, joined ESPN in 2015 after retiring from the NFL. He quickly became one of the network’s most recognizable football analysts, making regular appearances on “NFL Live,” “SportsCenter” and “First Take.”
The layoffs are expected to extend beyond Clark. ESPN and NFL Network are both reportedly cutting staff Tuesday as part of broader restructuring following Disney’s integration of the two football media operations.
Front Office Sports reported in June that significant workforce reductions were expected as a result of the ESPN-NFL Network merger, with both on-air personalities and behind-the-scenes employees facing potential job losses.
According to Marchand, Clark was making more than $2 million annually under a contract he signed in February 2024. Speculation about his future at ESPN had circulated since the Super Bowl in February.
His departure comes despite expectations that he would play a role in ESPN’s coverage of next year’s Super Bowl. The network is set to televise the NFL’s championship game for the first time, marking ESPN’s debut as the primary broadcaster after ABC last carried the Super Bowl in 2006.
During his time at ESPN, Ryan Clark built a reputation as one of the network’s most outspoken NFL voices. His strong opinions occasionally sparked controversy, including a heated on-air clash with fellow analyst Peter Schrager on “Get Up” last September.

Clark criticized Schrager as a “non-player” during the exchange, which reportedly continued after the cameras stopped rolling. He later apologized for the incident.
