Paul Pelosi Charged In Connection With Hit-And-Run Incident

Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been charged with a misdemeanor hit-and-run offense in connection with a July 3 collision in Yountville, California.

According to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, Pelosi was driving his convertible vehicle when it struck an unoccupied parked car — described in some accounts as a Tesla — on Yount Street. An eyewitness contacted authorities around 2:30 p.m., stating that the convertible hit the parked vehicle, causing significant damage, briefly stopped, and then drove away.

Deputies from the Napa County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. They later located Pelosi’s vehicle, which had sustained significant front-right damage consistent with the collision on the parked car. The parked vehicle was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported.

Pelosi continued driving until his car became disabled approximately half a mile away. During the investigation, Pelosi told authorities that he knew he had hit something but was unsure what it was and stated that he had intended to return to leave his information.

A preliminary screening showed no alcohol in his system, and authorities determined that driving under the influence was not a factor.

On Friday, July 17, Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley announced that charges had been filed against Pelosi. He faces one misdemeanor count of hit-and-run for being involved in a collision resulting in property damage and failing to stop and provide his driver’s license and vehicle registration information, as required by California law.

He was also charged with the infraction of making an unlawful turn. The misdemeanor hit-and-run charge carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in county jail, a fine not exceeding $1,000, or both. Pelosi is scheduled to appear in Napa County Superior Court on August 14.

The District Attorney’s Office noted that it does not typically issue press releases for misdemeanor hit-and-run cases involving only property damage but did so in this instance due to significant public and media interest.

Prosecutors have indicated they may request a behind-the-wheel driving evaluation and could seek conditions on any probation, such as restrictions on driving. Maximum probation for such a charge is one year.

“Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle. Speaker Pelosi will not be commenting further on this private matter,” a spokesperson for the Pelosi family said immediately following the incident.

The latest incident marks the second time in recent years that Paul Pelosi has faced charges stemming from a traffic collision in Napa County. On May 28, 2022, Pelosi was involved in a crash in the Oakville area while driving a Porsche. According to authorities, his vehicle collided with another after he attempted to cross State Route 29.

He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a blood sample showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.082%.

The Napa County District Attorney’s Office filed misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or higher causing injury. On August 23, 2022, in Napa County Superior Court before Judge Joseph Solga, Pelosi pleaded guilty to the charge of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Causing Injury through his attorney. The second charge was dismissed.

He was sentenced to three years of summary probation, five days in jail, a $1,723 court fine, $4,927.53 in victim restitution for medical bills and lost wages plus a standard $150 restitution fine, completion of a three-month licensed DUI program, and installation of a functioning certified ignition interlock device for one year.
