Pete Hegseth Sends Cryptic Message Just Moments After Susie Wiles Firing

Pete Hegseth had just three words to share Friday afternoon as President Donald Trump shook up the top ranks of his White House.

“Patriots in control,” Hegseth wrote on X.

The Pentagon chief’s cryptic message, timestamped 2:27 p.m., came shortly after news broke that Trump was replacing White House chief of staff Susie Wiles with longtime adviser Stephen Miller.

Hegseth did not mention Wiles, Miller, or the staffing change. His post offered no explanation, leaving unclear whether he was addressing the White House shakeup or sending a broader message about the administration, but the timing of the post left little doubt.

Trump announced Friday that Miller, currently his deputy chief of staff, would take over Monday, Nov. 9. Wiles will move to the president’s political operation.

The president praised his departing chief of staff, saying she had done an outstanding job, while elevating one of the most forceful advocates for his immigration agenda.

The personnel change follows Republicans’ losses in Tuesday’s midterm elections and comes as Hegseth faces his own political fight over his leadership of the Pentagon and the war in Iran.

Just one day earlier, Hegseth released a defiant video defending the administration’s record and pushing back against efforts to impeach him.

He pointed to the Pentagon’s reversal of diversity policies and other changes under his watch, arguing that opposition to his leadership stemmed from his success in carrying out Trump’s agenda.

Friday’s post also echoed language from that Thursday address, in which Hegseth declared that patriots were now in control while discussing changes at the Pentagon.

Trump, meanwhile, publicly backed Hegseth on Thursday amid questions about whether the secretary would become a casualty of the post-election fallout.

Miller’s promotion puts a longtime Trump loyalist in charge of managing the White House as the administration prepares to confront a Democratic-controlled Congress.

Hegseth’s brief message offered no details about his own future and stopped short of explicitly endorsing the chief of staff change.
