NBC’s Savannah Guthrie fought back tears Tuesday as she used her platform on the “Today” show to make a public plea for answers in the mysterious disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, after reports surfaced that a ransom note claimed the 84-year-old was “buried in nature.”
“This is unusual and unprecedented to say the least to be sitting here. But I don’t have any comment on this story, and I’m not involved in our coverage — but I can’t pretend I’m not here. And so, since I am, I wanted to take the opportunity to ask people to, to beg people to come forward, somebody knows something,” Savannah Guthrie said.
The longtime morning host then delivered an emotional appeal on behalf of her family.
“This is the life that my sister lives, I live, that my brother lives, that our extended family lives, that our children live every day and we are in agony. And we cannot be in peace.”
Investigators believe Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her home during the early hours of Feb. 1, 2026, based on the time her pacemaker stopped communicating with her phone.

She was reported missing the following day, launching a search that has now stretched nearly five months. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or persons of interest.
In the days immediately after her disappearance, multiple ransom notes were sent, including messages received by a Tucson television station and celebrity news outlet TMZ.
Authorities determined many of the messages were fraudulent, but TMZ reported that investigators considered two of the notes to be credible.
One message, received Feb. 2, demanded a $4 million ransom in bitcoin and included instructions on how to establish a cryptocurrency exchange.
A second email sent Feb. 6 from the same IP address reportedly contained the chilling statement that Nancy Guthrie was “buried in nature.”
TMZ later received another series of emails from an individual who claimed to have information about the kidnapper and sought payment in cryptocurrency.
Those messages also suggested Nancy Guthrie had died. One email stated that “time is no longer of the essence.”
According to TMZ, the outlet contacted the FBI and inquired about paying the ransom in an effort to see where the trail might lead as part of a possible documentary project.
The FBI reportedly described the emails as “interesting,” but did not pursue any effort to pay the ransom in hopes of obtaining additional information.
