Austin’s Central Library, a $125 million taxpayer-funded facility once celebrated as one of the city’s architectural landmarks, is once again at the center of debate over public safety after a conservative media report highlighted crime, homelessness, and security concerns inside the downtown building.
Frontlines TPUSA correspondent Savannah Hernandez posted a video describing the six-story library as being “completely overrun with the homeless,” arguing that the facility has become an unsafe environment for families and children.
Standing outside the library, Hernandez said the building, which spans more than 200,000 square feet and features a rooftop garden, art gallery, café, and children’s areas, no longer resembles the community destination city leaders envisioned when it opened.
“This is a $125 million taxpayer-funded library that took over 10 years to complete, and it is now completely overrun with the homeless,” Hernandez said in the video.
“I got in the elevator, and a homeless man who was clearly on drugs jumped on the elevator with me and was having some type of mental breakdown and started threatening the guy that was on the elevator as well,” Hernandez said.
“We stopped on the kids’ floor, and a bunch of kids tried to get on the elevator with this guy, and I told them not to.”
The video also pointed to several high-profile violent crimes that have occurred at the library over the past year.
In March, a 62-year-old man suffered life-threatening brain injuries after police say he was punched from behind while using a public computer before being repeatedly stomped on. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis happened to be inside the library conducting a safety meeting when the attack occurred and detained the suspect before officers arrived.
Hernandez referenced the incident as evidence that violence has become a recurring problem inside the facility.
“A homeless man decided to come up behind him and punch him in the head,” she said. “When he fell to the floor, that homeless man then stomped on his head, causing life-threatening brain injuries.”
In October 2025 there was a shooting inside the library after a suspect allegedly shot a patron in a sixth-floor restroom. Authorities later arrested the suspect, who investigators say was also connected to an earlier shooting aboard a city bus that same day.
“There have been so many incidents at this library that they have police officers who are just posted up here now permanently,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez blamed Austin’s approach to homelessness for the current conditions, pointing to the city council’s 2019 decision to legalize public camping in many areas of the city. Although Austin voters later approved a ballot measure reversing the policy, she argued the effects continue to be felt years later.
Austin’s Central Library has earned national recognition for its design and amenities, including children’s programming, public meeting spaces, technology resources, and cultural exhibits.
The city has continued operating family events and educational programs at the facility despite ongoing security concerns. Officials have responded by increasing security and expanding mental health outreach as they work to address ongoing public safety concerns.
