Amy Acton, the Democratic Party nominee in the Ohio gubernatorial race, went viral for all the wrong reasons on Saturday as a result of a shrill rally rally speech that has drawn comparisons to former presidential nominee Howard Dean’s infamous rally in 2004.
“I am a scrappy kid from Youngstown and scrappy kids from Youngstown never back down from a fight. That’s what we have on our hands, a fight. A fight against self-serving billionaires and people with special interests. And that’s the thing, we’re done with people coming in from out of here, like Elon Musk and his money, telling us who we should be and how we should live,” Acton, who previously served as Ohio’s Health Department director, shouted to the crowd.
Acton’s voice frequently cracked as she then attempted to lead supporters in chants of, “You can’t buy us,” though very few joined in.

In January 2004, after a third-place finish in the Iowa caucuses, then-presidential candidate Howard Dean delivered a high-energy speech to supporters. Near the end he listed upcoming primary states and finished with a loud “Yeah!” that was captured by a microphone close to him.
Television networks replayed the isolated yell hundreds of times. The moment became a cultural shorthand for a campaign event whose audio and energy, once stripped of crowd noise, appeared out of proportion.
Dean later said the room itself was loud and that the isolated clip did not reflect how the speech sounded in person. The episode is frequently cited in political circles whenever a candidate’s rally delivery is judged to have gone too far.

Acton is currently facing Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio’s gubernatorial race. The RealClearPolitics polling average, which currently covers surveys from mid-June through early August, shows Acton with a tight lead at 47.3 percent to Ramaswamy’s 47.0 percent.
Public polling has shown a close contest in a state that has voted Republican in recent presidential races but remains competitive at the statewide level. Both campaigns have spent heavily on advertising, and the race is widely viewed as one of the more closely watched gubernatorial contests of 2026.
