The White House has debunked claims that Vice President JD Vance was “snubbed” by Qatar’s delegation at the ongoing peace summit in Switzerland, which aims to broker a lasting peace between the United States and Iran.
Vice President JD Vance participated in a quadrilateral meeting at the Bürgenstock Resort near Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, which has continued into the following day. The meeting involved representatives from the United States, Iran, Pakistan, and Qatar.
Pakistan and Qatar served as mediators in discussions aimed at advancing a framework agreement related to U.S.-Iran relations, including topics such as nuclear issues, security in the Strait of Hormuz, and regional ceasefire efforts.
Video footage from the event, recorded prior to or around the start of formal proceedings, circulated widely on social media platforms. The clip shows Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, approaching a group that included Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
In the footage, Al Thani can be seen interacting with Sharif and Munir through greetings or embraces. Vice President Vance is visible standing nearby but does not receive a handshake or direct greeting from Al Thani in the specific sequence captured.
Similar footage elements involving Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi greeting Sharif without engaging Vance also appeared in related clips.
Reports in various outlets described the moment as an apparent bypass or lack of acknowledgment during what some characterized as a photo opportunity or greeting sequence. Social media commentary amplified claims that the Qatari delegation had “snubbed” Vice President Vance, framing the interaction as a diplomatic slight or sign of tension.

U.S. officials addressed these claims directly in statements to the New York Post. “This is complete nonsense. The US delegation had just spent hours with the Qataris and there was no need to re-greet someone having just spent hours with. The decision to give statements together before meeting was done impromptu, which is why it wasn’t a staged greeting,” one official said.
According to the official account, substantive discussions between the U.S. delegation, led by Vice President Vance, and Qatari representatives had already taken place over several hours immediately prior to the public greeting moment shown in the video. In this context, a formal re-greeting was not required or expected, as the parties had concluded extended private talks.
The White House released video material documenting Vice President Vance’s participation in the quadrilateral meeting itself, showing the U.S. side engaged in the proceedings alongside the other delegations. No participating government issued statements describing the greeting sequence as a snub or diplomatic incident.
Vance was also seen participating in discussions with bin Abdulrahman Al Thani into the early Monday morning hours.
